Typically, when anyone says they have decades worth of experience in a given field, we associate that individual with having a high degree of knowledge and experience. This is no different in the world of professional photography, but there is so much more to it.
If you think back to several decades ago, the digital world we know and love today was nonexistent. Instead, we worked with film. Rather than instantaneously viewing each shot and adjusting on the fly, we had to be diligent in our understanding of proper lighting, exposure, and posing. We had to get it right the first time because there was truly no margin for error.
